Lady Irish defeat Glendale in 7th PK
Posted by Coach T under: Irish Soccer .
In an incredible match the Lady Irish and Glendale battled to a 1-1 draw after regulation and two 10 minute golden goal overtime periods. Lorin Opfer put the Lady Falcons on top in the 59th minute with a leaping header at the back post off an Emily Williams corner kick. The Lady Irish showed great heart as they battled back into a strong wind and tied the game in the 75th minute on a breakaway goal by Shelby Hatz after taking a through ball from Tara Bailes. The Irish defense of Anne Prenger, Kathleen Garrison, Ronnie Renner, Andrea Parker, and Carsen Baron were stellar on the evening and both goalkeepers were fantastic in the net and came to their teams’ rescue on numerous occasions. The Falcons’ Rachel Duckworth stopped three Irish breakaways and with five minutes left in the second overtime she made a remarkable diving save to stop a Tara Bailes shot that appeared to have won the game for Catholic. Catholic’s Rachel Scott made two equally impressive saves in the second overtime, the first stopped a sure game winner for Glendale as she dove to her right and deflected the ball off the left post keeping the Irish in the match.
The game would be decided with PKs. Anne Prenger, Ronnie Renner, and Tara Bailes converted for the Irish, but at the end of the first five shooters the score stood at 3-3 sending the PK competition to sudden death. Rachel Scott converted for Catholic on the 6th kick and Maddy Renner scored the game winner on the 7th kick.
