Catholic Challenged St. John’s Vianney

Posted by soccermom under: Boys News .

In a game that could of easily been viewed as a David and Goliath scenerio, St. John’s Vianney being ranked 15th in the Nation playing the second year Springfield Catholic program; or the fact that Vianney was stacked with veteran seniors and juniors to many of Catholic’s underclassmen; or the fact that most of the Vianney players were about a head taller and pounds heavier one on one to Catholic players -  Catholic never conceded to Vianney.

Vianney struck fast and first by scoring at 2 minutes.  Catholic responded only 2 minutes later, when Cullen Barr headed in a perfectly placed corner kick by Luke Straus (Goal 1).    Although Catholic gave up one more goal to Vianney during the first half – Catholic remained a contender with a 2-1 half time score.

After the half time talk and apparently leaving the first half jitters behind, at 54 minutes, Cullen Barr drove the ball down the field and had a legimate shot on goal that hit the cross bar.  The ball was not fielded cleanly so it continued to bounce around until David Bailey virtually ran the ball into the goal (Goal 2).  The game remained tied 2-2 until a Vianney player found a hole in the defense and shot the ball pass the Catholic GK Levi Millsap giving Vianney the 3-2 edge.

Although Catholic had a couple of drives down the field that were not completed, Vianney made many of their own attacks that were defended by the Catholic defense and GK.  Catholic seemed to maintain their composure and continued to attack their opponent.

Catholic falls to the left side of the bracket facing Lee Summit West (who lost to Glendale tonight 4-3) at 8:30 am at the Kickapoo soccer field.
