Pattonville defeats Lady Irish 2-1 in first round of Jeff City tournament

The Pattonville Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Irish in a hard fought battle in the opening game of the Capital City Classic in Jefferson City.  The Pirates opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Candis Clark scored on an incredible 15 yard flick into the far post “upper 90” from a Mikala McGhee free kick.  The Irish equalized one minute later when Natalie Smid played the ball wide to Rachel Herron who knocked it forward to Bekah Bade running behind the Pirate defense.  Bekah put the keeper on the ground with a nice cut move and rolled the ball into the open net.  Catholic suffered a significant loss when Shelby Hatz had to leave the game in the 14th minute with an ankle sprain.  The Irish defense played well throughout the game and the attack was able to generate several good chances early in the second half, but it was Pattonville who scored the game winner in the 63rd minute on a scramble in the penalty area following one of McGhee’s remarkably long throw-ins.
