Lady Irish defeat Marshfield 3-2

The Catholic girls raised their record to 5-0 in the COC small school division and 11-6 overall with tonight’s win over the Lady Bluejays in Marshfield. Catholic controlled play for the majority of the first half as Carsen Baron, Rebecca Mayus, Kathleen Garrison, and Connor Guy were able to control the quick Marshfield front runners. Rachel Scott cleaned up the few balls that got through the back line. Natalie Smid, Maddy Renner, Emily Loethen, Rachel Herron, Jessica Bowman, Jordan Banasik, and Courtney Devlin possessed the ball well in the midfield and kept continuous pressure on the Marshfield goal with Bekah Bade and Emily Kessler playing up top. Jessica Bowman put the Irish on the board in the 18th minute when she hit a nice shot just under the bar from 18 yards after receiving a pass from Andrea Parker. Catholic went up 2-0 in the 29th minute when Rachel Herron took a pass from Maddy Renner on the right wing, cut into the middle of the field and beat the keeper inside the right post. Marshfield came out with great intensity to start the second half and knocked the ball into the net 30 seconds after the opening whistle cutting their deficit to one. Inspired by the goal they picked up the intensity and equalized in the 53rd minute when the Irish failed to clear a corner kick. Catholic finally settled down again in the 60th minute and began to regain possession in the midfield and pressure the Marshfield goal. Natalie Smid scored the game winner in the 67th minute with a great shot from 20 yards into the right post side netting off a pass from Courtney Devlin. The Irish began the game without the services of Shelby Hatz, Anna DeLong, Ronnie Renner, Erin FitzGerald, Emily Ortega, and Mandy Bailes due to injury or illness and they lost Rachel Herron to a leg injury during the game. Hopefully these girls will recover soon and be able to return to action.
The Lady Irish won the JV match 8-1.
