Catholic Opens Season With A Loss

For Catholic’s first game of the 2009 season, Waynesville hosted the game at their field tonight.  Although this was Catholic’s first game, Waynesville already had two wins in their score book – with decisive 8-0 and 5-0 over their other opponents. 

Last year’s match between the two proved to be a well matched, physical event with Catholic on top with a 1-0 score.  Catholic came up short in tonight’s match falling to Waynesville 2-1.  Although the score was in Waynesville favor, the action on the field showed an obviously more matured and technically sound Catholic team.  Their passing game was routinely crisp allowing them to move the ball around the field fairly well. 

Catholic got down 2-0 when miscommunications on the field allowed Waynesville to score even when shooting far outside the box.  Luke Straus was able to put Catholic on the scoreboard with a shot on the left side of the goal off a pass from Justin Bowenschulte.  Catholic finished the game with more aggressive attacks on goal just not able to finish off any of their attempts.    The game ended with Waynesville on top, 2-1.

Nick Kofron one of the three captains provided solid leadership in his new role as a center mid, while freshman Mitchell Moncada provided an energetic spark off the bench.  Even with the loss, Catholic appeared to a more solid team that has the potential of another solid season.

Catholic JV also had a loss to Waynesville JV 2-1.    Similar to their Varsity counterpart, they went down 2-0 when they were able to get on the board.  Jim Hill worked the ball into the middle of the box preparing to shoot when he was fouled by a Waynesville defender.  Tim Brooks took advantage of the PK by putting the ball in the back of the net.

 

 

 

 

Catholic Varsity’s next game is 2:00 pm on Saturday at Pembroke in KC.  Both JV and Varsity play Tuesday in Marshfield starting at 4:30 pm.
