Catholic Seals First Win
Posted by soccermom under: Irish Soccer .
For the second year, Catholic travelled to KC to face the Class 2 Pembroke Hill Raiders. The Raiders have historically had a strong soccer program with final four appearances in each of the past 5 years. Again this year, Springfield Catholic was able to defeat the Raiders, this year with a 3-1 score.
Catholic scored early, only 3 minutes and 15 seconds into the game, Luke Straus was able to score on a pass from free kick taken by Reid Harbach (Straus had been fouled creating the free kick opportunity). Unfortunately Pembroke Hill answered about 6 minutes later on a shot inside the 6 box in front of the goal. The game remained tied until the end of the first half.
The second half proved to have more energy by the Springfield Catholic creating a more successful passing game along with a fairly physical game by both teams. Catholic took the lead at 49:28 when David Bailey was able to score on a pass from Justin Bowenschulte. Catholic got the security goal at 76:37 when a deep punt from GK Levi Millsap was received by Luke Straus. Straus, beating the defense, was able to slip the ball past the Pembroke GK.

Catholic’s success today was centered around a good passing game along with following a game plan of shutting down the opponent’s goal threats. Luke Straus noteably has 3 of the 4 goals scored by Catholic this year in their first two games. Other scoring threats were present today without being able to finish – but the opportunities were created and significant progress was made in just the past two games.
Varsity has an away game on Tuesday at Marsfield at 5:00 pm. The Marshfield JV game has been cancelled due to injuries on the Marshfield team.
