Lady Irish defeat Kickapoo 3-1
Posted by soccermom under: Irish Soccer .
Rain forced the annual battle with the Lady Chiefs to the turf field at JFK, but despite the steady rain the girls were excited and ready for the match. Kickapoo attacked from the opening whistle and won two corner kicks in the first two minutes. The Irish were aggressive in defending and were able to clear the ball from danger on both occasions. In the 14th minute Bekah Bade broke free down the right side of the field and played a square ball that Shelby Hatz finished nicely back across into the right post side netting. Two minutes later lightning sent the game into a 30 minute delay. Following the delay the Irish picked up the intensity and in the 29th minute Bekah Bade was taken down in the penalty area and Ronnie Renner buried the PK putting the Irish up by two. Rebecca Mayus and Carsen Baron played exceptionally well in the central defense all night as did wing defenders Ronnie Renner, Connor Guy, Jessica Bowman and Emily Loethen. Erin FitzGerald chased Kickapoo standout Makenna Adams all over the field with help from Natalie Smid and Mandy Bailes and they did a good job of not letting Adams get any great looks at the goal from the run of play. The Irish rotated five outside midfielders on the evening in an attempt to keep fresh legs on the field and got solid play from Andrea Parker, Emily Ortega, Rachel Herron, Courtney Devlin, and AnnMarie Banasik. The best Irish goal of the season to date came in the 57th minute when Jordan Banasik was able to win a corner kick. Erin FitzGerald played a high ball to the middle of the goal about eight yards out. Natalie Smid went up strong and headed the ball back across into the left post side netting putting the Irish up by three. Makenna Adams scored for the Lady Chiefs in the 64th minute when she hit a 30 yard blast just under the bar from a free kick. Rachel Scott and Megan Goetzinger played well in goal handling several skidding balls on the wet turf.
Kickapoo won a hard fought JV match 3-1. The Chiefs were up 2-0 at the half, but the Irish battled back scoring a goal on a great follow by Diane Kielhofner of a ball that struck the post. Catholic had several good chances to equalize including a shot that hit the left post, but the Chiefs were able to score a final goal on a breakaway late in the match.
