Posted by soccermom under: Irish Soccer .
The Lady Irish defeated Trinity Catholic 3-0 today at the A-B Center in St. Louis to claim the Class 1 State Championship, the first for Springfield Catholic girls’ soccer. Back line players Rebecca Mayus, Carsen Baron, Ronnie Renner, Connor Guy, Jessica Bowman, and Emily Loethen, along with goalkeepers Rachel Scott and Megan Goetzinger completed an amazing run of 10 consecutive shutouts to close the season. The Catholic midfield dominated the Titans winning the vast majority of the 50/50 balls and possessing well in the Trinity half. Natalie Smid and Erin FitzGerald again worked well together with support from Andrea Parker in starting the Irish attack. While Emily Ortega, Rachel Herron, Bekah Bade, and Courtney Devlin played well on the flanks. Shelby Hatz, Bekah Bade, Andrea Parker, and Jordan Banasik put pressure on the Titan backs all night. Catholic had several good opportunities in the first half, but Trinity keeper Taylor Zerbe frustrated the Irish with three great saves. The half ended 0-0, but with the wind in the second half the girls liked their chances to break through. Finally in the 55th minute Natalie played the ball wide to Bekah on the left moving toward the penalty area. Bekah touched the ball around a defender and let loose a 25 yard looping shot that just cleared Zerbe’s hand and grazed the underneath side of the bar on the way into the net. The goal set off a roar from the Irish contingent and Bekah almost killed Natalie when she jumped on her after a 25 yard dead sprint! One minute later, Bekah played a great ball to Shelby who beat Zerbe for a two goal lead. Natalie completed the scoring when her 35 yard cross bounded off a Titan defender into the goal. All 22 Irish players contributed on the field to the win as Mandy Bailes, AnnMarie Banasik, Michelle Garrison, Sara Bolin, and Diane Kielhofner contributed solid minutes to close out the Titans and bring home the championship to SCHS.
