Zach comes back to Springfield after being the assistant men’s coach at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa for the past two seasons. While in Dubuque, Alumbaugh helped guide the Duhawks to two conference championships and two NCAA Division III tournament appearances, reaching the Final Four in 2008 and the Sweet 16 in 2009. Along with being the top assistant, Zach was also in charge of the goalkeepers for both the men’s and women’s team at Loras. Prior to his time in Dubuque Zach was a coach and Director of External Affairs with the Springfield Soccer Club from 2004 to 2008. Alumbaugh is a 2002 graduate of Loras College receiving his degree in Sports Management and Administration. Zach was a four year starter in goal for the Duhawks and still holds career records for shutouts and saves at Loras and his career 1.31 GAA is good for 4^th all time. Zach has a USSF coaching license.

Zach and his fiancée Kelli will be getting married in June of 2010 and will live in Springfield.

Zach joins Dr. Tom Hoff and Chad Jaeger, former players of Drury University, and Dr. Joe Kofron, who played for the University of Evansville, for the upcoming fall 2010 season.

The 2008 SCHS Boy’s Soccer Team Banquet was attended by over 100 players, coaches, administrators, family and friends at Millie’s Pavilion on Thursday, December 4.  A special thanks goes out to Gina Harbach that elegantly organized the event with personalized place settings for the players, programs and celebration cake for the team’s achievements. 

Missouri State University Soccer Coach, Jon Leamy was the special guest speaker.  He spoke to the team about prioritizing responsibilities in life, as well as sports, and the meaning and significance of teamwork. 

All JV and Varsity players were recognized and were presented with their certificates and letters.  Special awards, both team and coach selections, were also presented.

 
A video presentation commemorating the team’s games and activities was prepared and shown by Jim James. 

The banquet was concluded with the players sharing some of their memorable minutes, some which only the other players could appreciate.  Then the player’s recognized their coaches with special gifts – some of which were refined – while others also were only those that the coaches and players could appreciate their meanings.

With a strong appearance and contribution by everyone on the roster, Catholic defeated St. Pius X 3-1 for 3rd Place in the MSHSAA Boys Soccer State Championship tournament. (See award ceremony)

David Bailey put Catholic on the board first off a pass from Justin Bowenschulte 17 minutes into the game.  St. Puis X responded quickly when Parrish drove the ball on the left side of the field and hit the right side of the goal at 18 minutes. 

Catholic possessed the ball much of the time and were able to get the go-ahead goal at 35 minutes when Cullen Barr found the back of the net.  This goal gave Catholic the half-time advantage with a 2-1 score.

The entire game was very physical with numerous yellow cards being issued to both teams, with one St. Pius X player receiving a soft red card as a result of receiving two yellow cards.

Catholic was able to get an insurance goal when Cullen Barr got his second goal of the game with an assist from Justin Bowenschulte at 75 minutes.

Catholic faced the older and more experienced John Burroughs team in the semi-final game played today in Fenton at 1:00 pm.  The sun was shinning, wind was blowing cold when the teams entered the field.  Catholic was forced to play a lot of defense in the first half but was able to end the half with a 0-0 score.

Catholic was able to score first at 47 min, when David Bailey had the ball in the top of the box, passed the ball to Justin Bowenschulte who was able to place the ball in the right corner past the JB GK.  Catholic came out energized and began controlling the game until about the 52 minute when there was a change in the momentum of the game.  Consequently, JB’s Ettinger was able to score on a pass from Martin at 58 minutes.  Unfortunately JB’s Martin was able to score on a corner kick at 69 minutes giving JB the go ahead and winning goal. 

Although Catholic never retreated,  and played until the final whistle they were unable to score another goal to tie the game.  The final score was 2-1 placing Catholic in the 3rd place game tomorrow at 10:00 am.
