Lady Irish defeat Parkway West in first round of Kickapoo Shootout

Catholic defeated the Lady Longhorns 3-0 in the first round of the Kickapoo Shootout in one of the best games the girls have played this season. Just two minutes into the game Andrea Parker drilled a shot from the right side of the penalty area causing the keeper to dive to her left. She couldn’t quite control the ball and Bekah Bade put the loose ball in the net. The Irish defense was remarkable all evening against the physical possession game of Parkway West. The back line players, Rebecca Mayus, Carsen Baron, Ronnie Renner, Connor Guy, Emily Loethen, and Jessica Bowman with assistance from Erin FitzGerald and Natalie Smid in the midfield only allowed three shots on the evening. The midfield was equally impressive as Andrea Parker, Emily Ortega, Rachel Herron, Courtney Devlin, Mandy Bailes, and AnnMarie Banasik along with Smid and FitzGerald were equal to the Longhorn midfield. Shelby Hatz and Bekah Bade put pressure on the Parkway West backs with their speed and Jordan Banasik contributed significantly to the Irish attack. Catholic got a critical second goal four minuted before the half when Smid send Hatz in along. Shelby drew the keeper and hit a solid shot that the keeper got a piece of, but couldn’t quite control. The ball just did cross the line as a Longhorn defender desperately attempted to clear. The Irish were able to seal the game in the 77^th minute when Shelby Hatz found the end of a Carsen Baron free kick and scored her second goal of the night. Rachel Scott and Megan Goetzinger recorded the shutout in goal for the Irish.

Lady Irish defeat Bolivar 1-0

Catholic defeated Bolivar in a physical battle at Bolivar. The Irish had several half chances early in the match but were unable to penetrate the Liberator defense and the half finished with no score. The second half was much the same as the first with the Irish attacking as Bolivar’s defense bent but did not break. Finally in the 56^th minute Natalie Smid broke in on the left side of the penalty area and played a great cross that was volleyed in by Rachel Herron who made a strong run down the right side from her outside midfield position. The defense played well all night especially Ronnie Renner who was able to neutralize Bolivar’s Jonna Welch throughout the second half. Rachel Scott and Megan Goetzinger combined for the shutout for the Irish.

Bolivar won the JV match 3-1.

Catholic defeats Neosho

The Lady Irish rebounded from their opening day loss to defeat the Neosho Lady Wildcats 10-0 tonight at Cooper Park. Catholic was led by Mandy Bailes who scored two goals and had two assists. Freshman Michelle Garrison scored her first Lady Irish goal and added an assist. Sophomore defender, Connor Guy scored her first varsity goal much to the delight of her teammates. Andrea Parker, Natalie Smid, Shelby Hatz, Erin FitzGerald, and Bekah Bade each had a goal for the Irish and assists were tallied by FitzGerald, Hatz, Bade, and Courtney Devlin.

The Catholic JV defeated the Wildcats 2-0 behind goals from Olivia Dobard and Hannah Hall.

Lady Irish Defeat St. Pius X Finish 3rd in State

The Catholic girls rebounded following a difficult semifinal defeat to down St. Pius X of Kansas City 4-0 to capture 3^rd place in Class 1. All 22 available girls played and made significant contributions to the win. Andrea Parker notched the first goal for the Irish in the 19^th minute when she knocked in a cross from Maddy Renner. Catholic had several more good chances in the first half, including a strong shot by Courtney Devlin that hit the cross bar, but were unable to extend the lead. After a slow first five minutes of the second half that saw a couple of decent chances for St. Pius, the Irish took control of the game. Anna DeLong played the most intense game of the season in her final match for Catholic and it was her strong run in the 53^rd minute that turned a close match in the favor of the Lady Irish. Anna powered her way into the penalty area on the left and hit a strong shot off the cross bar that rebounded to Shelby Hatz who slotted the ball nicely inside the right post. Shelby put the game away three minutes later when she took a pass from Maddy and buried the ball into the right post side netting. Natalie Smid finished the scoring in the 70^th minute when she struck a solid shot under the bar from 15 yards after taking a pass from Bekah Bade. The play was set up by Emily Kessler who won a battle just outside the penalty area which began the sequence leading to the goal. The defense held up during the match as Carsen Baron, Rebecca Mayus, Erin FitzGerald, Kathleen Garrison, Connor Guy, Jessica Bowman, and Emily Loethen kept the St. Pius attack in check limiting them to ten shots, none of which were particularly dangerous. Rachel Scott and Megan Goetzinger combined for the shutout in goal for the Lady Irish. In addition to the midfield starters, Rachel Herron, Courtney Devlin, Emily Ortega, Jordan Banasik, and Whitney Lucas contributed solid minutes off the bench.

This was the final match for Lady Irish seniors, Anna DeLong, Kathleen Garrison, Emily Kessler, and Maddy Renner. All four girls have made major contributions to Lady Irish soccer during their four years in the program. Thank you girls for all you have done…….you will be fondly remembered!

Catholic defeats Southern Boone 2-1 advances to State Finals

Catholic defeated Southern Boone County 2-1 tonight in the state quarterfinal game in Waynesville to advance to the state finals in Fenton. Natalie Smid scored in the 3^rd minute off a pass from Maddy Renner. Jessica Bowman put the Irish up by two in the 36^th minute when she hit a solid shot from 25 yards after taking a pass from Natalie Smid. Catholic had numerous opportunities in each half, but had great difficulty finishing against the Lady Eagles. In the 69^th minute Southern Boone All-State performer, Tillie Bill, found the left post “upper 90” bringing her team to within a goal. The Irish were able to withstand the renewed energy of their opponents over the final 10 minutes to secure their first trip to state since 2004.

The Lady Irish will face Trinity Catholic, a 1-0 winner over Whitfield, in the state semifinal game on Friday, June 5^th at 1:00 pm on Field #1 at the A-B Soccer Center in Fenton.

Catholic wins District Championship

Catholic defeated Joplin McAuley 7-1 tonight in the district championship game in Pleasant Hope. Shelby Hatz scored twice for the Irish while Anna DeLong, Natalie Smid, Mandy Bailes, Bekah Bade, and Whitney Lucas each added a goal. Assists went to Carsen Baron (2), Maddy Renner, Anna DeLong, Rebecca Mayus, Emily Ortega, and Bekah Bade. The win marked the seventh straight district championship for the Lady Irish.

The Lady Irish will face Southern Boone County in the state quarterfinal game on Thursday night in Waynesville.

Lady Irish defeat Laquay, advance to District Championship

Catholic defeated Laquay 10-0 tonight in the District semi-final in Pleasant Hope. Natalie Smid, Anna Delong and Andrea Parker scored two goals each while Maddy Renner, Ronnie Renner, Erin FitzGerald and Bekab Bade each added a goal. Emily Kessler, Shelby Hatz, and Natalie Smid each had two assists. Emily Ortega and Maddy Renner each had one assist. Rachel Scott and Megan Goetzinger combined for the shutout in goal in the 64 minute match.

The Lady Irish will face Joplin McAuley in the Championship game on Thursday night. McAuley defeated Greenwood 4-3 in tonight’s other semi-final.

Catholic defeats Glendale in 2-1 thriller

The Lady Irish finished the regular season with an exciting come from behind 2-1 win over Glendale on the turf at JFK this evening. Glendale put tremendous pressure on the Irish during the first 30 minutes of the contest. The Falcons scored the first goal in the 24^th minute on a nice finish by Jeni Frewin assisted by Emilee Williams and Lindsey Sprouse. Rebecca Mayus, Carsen Baron, Kathleen Garrison, Connor Guy, and Jessica Bowman battled hard to get the team to the half without allowing another goal. During the final 10 minutes of the half the Irish attack came alive with Andrea Parker, Erin FitzGerald, the Renner sisters, Courtney Devlin, and Emily Loethen raising their level of play in the midfield to match the Falcons. Natalie Smid and Shelby Hatz generated two good shots in the final five minutes of the half and Catholic went to the break with renewed confidence. The two teams battled through the first 30 minutes of the second half with neither squad generating a great chance. Emily Ortega came on in the 57^th minute for the Irish and provided great energy in the midfield. In the 71^st minute Courtney Devlin won a corner kick for the Irish. Erin FitzGerald played a great ball to the back post that Bekah Bade headed into the goal leveling the match. The goal energized the Irish as the intensity of both sides increased. In the 78^th minute Carsen Baron played the ball behind the Glendale defense and Andrea Parker out ran the keeper and drove it into the net giving the Irish the lead that they held over the final two frantic minutes.

The Lady Irish won the JV match 2-0 finishing their season with a 10-1-1 record. Congratulations to the girls and coaches Meredith White and Carrie Semar for one of the best JV seasons we have had.
