Catholic Adds to Wins

Catholic JV started the night off with a 4-0 win over the Rogersville’s JV team.  In a game in which the Catholic JV controlled much of the game, Austin Lewis was able to have a foot, in some respect, on each goal that was scored.  Lewis was able to finish with 3 goals, with assists from Jim Hill and  Brandon Kratz.  Carson Shaefer was able to add a goal of his own with an assist by Austin Lewis.

In this Conference game, the second game of the night was so closely called, resulting in 4 Catholic Varsity yellow cards and 4 hand balls, the flow of the game became difficult.  Despite the continuous calls, nineteen Catholic players were able to have an opportunity to play in a game where they control most of it.  Although it took 18 minutes in the first half to score when Justin Bowenschulte was able to receive a short pass on a corner kick and center it to Nick Kofron for the first goal of the game.  At the 32st minute, Max Holtmann fed Cullen Barr the ball that he was able to convert into a goal.

Apparently inspired after the coaches’ talk , just 2 minutes into the second half, Cullen Barr scored with an assist from Luke Straus - ( Goal 3).  Just 4 minutes later, David Bailey followed a rebound of the goalie on a hard shot by Cullen Barr ( Goal 4).  At the 51st minute (only 5 minutes later),  Reid Harbach was able to place the ball in the box that was headed in by David Bailey ( Goal 5) .  The last goal of the evening was at the 79th minute on a long attack on goal in which Carson Shaefer was able to score on a rebound off the goal.   Catholic Varsity beat Rogersville Varsity with a final score of 6-0.

Catholic Varsity is now 5-0 and Catholic JV is 3-0-1.  Both teams remain undefeated.

The next game for Varsity is the highly anticipated game with the school’s rival Greenwood Bluejays on Saturday, September 20, at 7:00 pm at the Lake Country Soccer Complex.

Catholic remains undefeated

Catholic JV battled 70 minutes with Waynesville JV to finished in a 0-0 tie.  Even with several drives and attacks on goal toward the end of the game, they were unable to finish on opportunities they created.  They still remain undefeated with 2 wins and one tie on the year.

In the second game of the night and the first night under their new lights, Catholic V took 48 minutes before they could score what was to be the only goal when Adam Entrup drove the ball down the right side of the field and centered it to Justin Bowenschulte.  Offense continued to have several attacks on goal while defense continued to deny Waynesville attacks.  GK Levi Millsap contributed with a couple of key saves. Although the game became fairly physical with Waynesville receiving two yellow cards and one red card before it was over, Catholic was able to maintain their game.

In the second half, Luke Strauss passed the ball to Cullen Barr who was able to score at the 41st minute.  Although Catholic did not score again, with 2 more shots on goal, they used the rest of the game to control the ball and involve the entire field in their play.  The final score was 5-0 Catholic.

Irish defeat Pembroke Hill 2-1

Springfield Catholic, in their first game of the 2008 season, defeated last year’s state finalist, Prembroke Hill High School Soccer with a 2-1 score.

At 9 minutes, an unassisted goal by freshman Luke Straus was scored.  Then at 21 minutes, Cullen Barr sailed the ball passed the GK to the far post with assist from Justin Bowenschulte.

In the second half, at 41 minutes, the lone Prembroke goal was scored off a deflection off a defender’s back.  In front of an excited Catholic crowed, at 63 minutes, Cullen Barr broke away from the defenders, worked around the charging Pembroke GK, and unfortunately hit the post on the last shot on goal for Catholic.

The entire Catholic team continued to push forward while the defense stopped many drives by the frustrated Pembroke team.  However, Catholic held on to their lead with 3 saves by the Catholic GK Levi Millsap in the second half.

Randy Bailey captured both goals on tape  - and you can see them on Youtube
